How we started
In 2012, Springfield Public Schools (SPS) began writing its own online courses to serve its 25,000+ learners. SPS soon hired two full-time course developers and formed SPS Online, and—with the help of curriculum instructors and highly certified teachers—they developed a course catalog of nearly 50 course options for Springfield Public Schools students.
In early 2017, SPS Superintendent Dr. John Jungmann had a vision. What if SPS Online’s virtual courses could serve the needs of students in schools statewide? What if Springfield Public Schools could collaborate with other Missouri districts to meet the needs of all Missouri learners? Enter Launch, Missouri’s purpose-driven virtual course access program that was started at SPS and is designed and developed to best serve all Missouri students.
After Launch started with a group of 19 southwest Missouri districts in summer 2017, it quickly designated team members to help spread the word across the state. The more districts we partner with, the more students we can help! Launch gained its 200th Missouri school district partner in summer 2019, which is the same time that it opened two additional offices—Launch St. Louis and Launch Kansas City—to better serve students and partner school districts.
Today Launch has nearly 250 partners and works to serve hundreds of thousands of Missouri learners. Day in and day out, our team members continue to work to focus on our purpose-driven mission: providing all Missouri students access to quality virtual education.
