Medical Interventions
In Medical Interventions (MI), you investigate a variety of interventions involved in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease as you follow the lives of a fictitious family. It’s like a “How-To” manual for maintaining overall health and homeostasis in the body. You explore how to prevent and fight infection, how to screen and evaluate genetic information in DNA, how to prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer, and how to succeed when the organs of the body begin to fail. Through these scenarios, you are exposed to a wide range of interventions related to immunology, surgery, genetics, pharmacology, medical devices, and diagnostics. Each family case scenario introduces multiple types of interventions, reinforces concepts from previous courses, and presents new content. These interventions can range from simple diagnostic tests to treatments for complex diseases and disorders.
You’ll see these interventions across generations, providing a look at the past, present, and future of biomedical science. Lifestyle choices and preventive measures are emphasized throughout, highlighting the important role of scientific thinking and engineering design in developing future interventions. You will practice problem-solving with structured activities and move on to open-ended projects and problems that help you develop planning, documentation, communication, and other professional skills.
