Unit 1: Opera and Musical Theater
Overview: Two forms of art in the world of music are Opera and musical theater. Each of them tell a story using music, and sometimes dance, in a live performance. In this unit, you will explore the rich history and traditions of Opera and musical theater, learn vocabulary unique to these art forms, identify the similarities and differences of the two, and have the opportunity to experience a little of both.

- Select, organize, and document personal musical ideas for arrangements, songs, and compositions within expanded forms that demonstrate tension and release , unity and variety, balance, and convey expressive intent.
- Describe the rationale for refining works by explaining the choices, based on evaluation criteria.
- Select programs of music (such as a CD mix or live performances) and demonstrate the connections to an interest or experience for a specific purpose.
- Compare how the elements of music and expressive qualities relate to the structure within programs of music.
- Identify and compare the context of programs of music from a variety of genres, cultures, and historical periods.

Unit 2: Popular Music
Overview: Pop music fits in many different genres, but the one thing all “pop music” has in common is that it is the music that produces the most hits. A hit song is one that sells many copies, and charts on lists such as the Billboard Hot 100. Songs that become hits almost always share certain features no matter the genre. In this unit you will explore the history, characteristics, and techniques of various genres of “pop music.”

- Use standard and/or iconic notation and/or audio/ video recording to document personal rhythmic phrases, melodic phrases, and harmonic sequences.

Unit 3: Video Game Music
Overview: Over the past 50 years, just as video games have transitioned from a small computer screen to video arcades to PS5, video game music has evolved from simple blips and bleeps into something much more. Originally limited to computer sounds, it is now influenced by pop music, anime, electronic music and movie soundtracks. Video game music has become its own music category on the same level as TV or film scores. In this unit, you will learn some of the history of music in video games and the path it has taken. You will also learn about some of the composers who are changing the face of video game music.

Overview: The music used in movies is an important part of the storytelling process. It can help make you understand the emotional journey the characters on screen are experiencing. It guides you through the narrative in a unique way. Music can help make or break a film’s success. Since the beginning of entertainment music has been an integral part of the process. As technology advanced film music changed with it. In this unit you will explore the history of film music and its importance to the success of a film.
